MEDITATION

Picture
“Meditation is the tongue of the Soul and the language of our Spirit."
~ Jeremy Taylor

Much has been said and written about meditation over the ages. For many years, it was a life style mostly reserved for hermits or monks and nuns. Perhaps deeply buried memories of this from other life times is beneath the resistance that many have towards meditation.

My personal journey and dance with meditation goes back as far as I can remember. The journey has been an interesting one and the dance has been challenging and fun.  Meditation, truly is accessible by and to everyone, as it is a state of being. Mediation is not contemplation, a quick fix or an escape from reality. It does take some effort of will at first, when one sets out to release the mind. It is about being in a constant state of detached awareness - which may take a bit of practise.  It is much easier to do and simpler to achieve than our mind will let us believe and the greatest challenge is the game of seduction you will play within the mind.

You cannot force yourself to meditate or relax, because forcing is a function of the mind. The space the experiencing a meditative state will lead you to, is beyond and between the understanding of our brain or mind.  It is very possible though and over the last few years my awareness of just how adapted for meditation our whole body is, has opened me up to a whole world of new and greater possibilities.

There is no one way to meditate - this is again a trap of the mind.  I recently began facilitating meditation workshops to introduce people to what meditation can be and presenting them with just a few of the multitude of techniques that can be adopted to enduce a meditative state.
Today, I know that meditation is not something that I do every now and then for an hour or two.  Yes, it did take practise to get here, however, I can promise that the journey is well worth the travel. In fact the journey is the mediation ...............

If you are new to meditation or want to read up about it, I highly recommend Shakti Gawain's "Creative Visualisation". Shakti's work played a huge part in my own personal development when it comes to meditation, because her book made it "do-able" for me.  I also personally learned a lot with Louise Hay's meditations. Simultaneously, Eckhard Tolle's "The Power of Now" is an extremely instructive book on the art of meditating, even though it approaches the ultimate state of being from a different direction.  The lists is endless and these a just a few suggestions.

Music is also a great way to enduce a specific state of mind, so find music that calms and relaxes you. And then, just sit a listen - really listen with all your senses, not just your ears.  There are so many offers of free downloads today, so browse the web. Use your discernment though, especially when it come to methods of subliminal entrainment.

I believe that meditation has to be practical, otherwise people will not do it.  So find what works for you and keep on evolving!  I have done chanting for several years and although it's structure was a form of structured discipline that I required at the time, the morning did come when I found it totally restrictive and actually counter productive - for me.

Remember, that meditation is about "freedom of and from the mind" and in my experience many practices can simply become another form of entrapment.  Approach meditation as an athlete would approach a training programme. There is a programme that needs to be followed in order to prepare for the race.  Or if you are a keen gardener, then you know that there is work to be done to maintain and prepare the garden for each season. Learning to meditate is very similar, as we strip away apparent obstructions.

The beauty of meditation is that over time I have come to experience state of pure being, received conscious insights, resolved conflicts effortlessly and felt relaxed and rejuvenated, and moments of intense joy and heightened awareness and expansion. All without the use of drugs. If you allow it to support you, your body can product all the chemical concoctions you require to experience Bliss, with no side effects.

Meditation is also gaining more and more credit within the medical field, with regards to providing improved health and recovery.  Read my blog Prescription for Meditation. Ask you GP if he knows a meditation group in your area or ask at your local hospital if they have a group for patients. If more people start asking for meditation, this will encourage the medical sector to start promoting it more seriously, instead of just writing out prescriptions.  Medication has its place, however, in my opinion it does not address the underlying cause at the root of the symptom and therefore, true healing cannot be activated by the body.  At your health clinic, see if there is a meditation group recommended and if not, ask about it.  Whether you are on medication or not, meditation supports the body in healing faster and eliminating nefast side effects from pharmaceutical drugs with their side effects.  It is also a way to provide support to single people or families who are looking for different possibilities to take care of themselves or their loved ones.

Please do not be put off by the word "meditation". It is simply a label given to an activity. Be curious and experience it for yourself. Try different groups and see which one resonates more with you.  Meditation can be FUN believe it or not.  I don't know about you, but nowadays if things aren't fun or joyfilled for me, why do it?

Wishing you en-joyment on your journed of mediation .....................
